I was actually talking to a marine mammalogist last week and she mentioned that these skin flaps make otters REALLY difficult to train. Most trainers use small bits of food as positive reinforcement for doing something correctly, but otters will take the bits of food and store them in their skin flap. Then, when they don’t do a behavior the right way and don’t get more, they take the stored bits out and reward themselves which makes positive reinforcement training basically useless.
